Art & Design

Students will be following the Arts Award [a nationally recognised qualification], which supports young people to enjoy the arts, to connect with and take part in the wider arts world, and develop creativity, communication and leadership skills. Students will have the opportunity to achieve a Bronze or Silver Arts award in Year 8, Year 9 and gold award in Year 10. 

Students will have the opportunity to work in 2D, 3D and digital creative media. 

They will explore the visual elements and principles of Art through a variety of media, tools and techniques in mini workshop experiences. 

They will develop their skills in the visual arts through drawing, painting, ceramics, textiles, photography, printing and creative media.   

Students will select their own theme and build on workshop experiences. Exploring the creative potential of the discipline, combining technical skills and artistic ability to communicate ideas and observations.  

They will see how other artists, craftspeople and designers have used their skills to make the world a better place and how the work students do gives them a chance to be part of a worldwide group of creative people. 

Students will have the opportunity to be an audience member though trips, gallery visits, artist in residence workshops and theatre visits. 

They will have the opportunity to Share their skills with others; reflect on work and progress and present imaginative, personal and meaningful responses. 

Students may choose to study GCSE Art and Design as an option choice. 

They will learn to draw, paint and print, working analytically from observation, memory and imagination making works in pen, paint, mixed and multimedia and print. 

Students will also have the opportunity to work in 2D and 3D through fine art, ceramics, textiles, sculpture, printing, photography, graphic communication, typography. illustration, animation and creative digital media. 

They will see how other artists, craftspeople and designers have used their skills, to design and make our world a better place and how the work done at GCSE, will give them the chance to become a part of a worldwide group of creative and skilled people. 

Students could develop their GCSE with any art bias and include a range of skills and knowledge. They will develop, investigation, recording and design skills to produce final solutions to a brief. All students will explore the design process using a wide variety of media and techniques used by designers the world over. 

Confidence in creative expression will be encouraged through gallery visits and artists workshops.  

Successfully completing a GCSE could lead the way to entering a vast number of careers, including Architecture, Theatre Design, Costume Design, Interactive Media, Printmaking, Sculpture, Site Specific Sculpture, Photography, Visual Communication, Advertising, Animation, Film Studies, Art Therapy, Community Arts, Gallery Curator, to name just a few. In fact, Art & Design GCSE is useful for any career where an artistic and creative input is required.
