I am writing to you with further details of our plans for operation during the opening weeks of this term, between Wednesday January 6th and Friday January 15th.
Firstly, I would like to refer you to the announcement from Welsh Government, received at 5.00pm yesterday, which you can find on our website here
This explains the reasoning behind their decision but lacks some of the details that I have outlined below:
1. School premises
The school site will close to the vast majority of students at the start of this term. Between 6th and 15th January, only school staff and a small number of students with specific learning support requirements will be permitted, by invite, onto the school site.
Students will be learning from home during this time. This means that we will be delivering lessons and learning tasks through TEAMs. We will do this by following the normal timetable – so students should log on to their subject TEAM at 9.00am for a morning lesson or 1.00pm for an afternoon lesson to meet with their teachers and to access resources that have been provided for their learning. Teachers will be available to support them in a number of ways either ‘live’ or through ‘chat’ facilities and will be engaging them in learning opportunities using a variety of resources and techniques.
We will be monitoring attendance at these sessions and taking ‘registers’ in the normal way, so please encourage your child to engage with their learning during this time, and let us know if you anticipate any problems accessing TEAMs or the internet so we can provide what you need to continue learning effectively in this way.
3. Free School Meals
Parents of students who are entitled to Free School Meals will receive direct payments from the local authority in place of their meal, as has happened previously through holiday and ‘lock down’ periods.
We appreciate how challenging this period will be for you and your children, but we are confident that we can continue to provide meaningful opportunities for them, whatever year groups they are in. We will also do everything we can to support you remotely over the phone or by email and to maintain the high standards of learning and support you naturally expect from us.
Although this period of closure is set to end on January 18th, we are aware that schools in England are due to close for longer. We will therefore keep you informed of any further developments for the plans here in Wales next week and in particular any developments that will directly affect examinations for students in Years 11, 12 and 13.
In the meantime, I hope this reassures you of our commitment to our students and their learning at these challenging times, but if you need any further information, please let me know.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy and safe New Year.
With kind regards,
