Conwy Archives

Our Year Eight students have been in for a historical treat recently, with groups going to visit Conwy Archives in nearby Conwy Culture Centre. Conwy Archives – which also houses the Conwy Museum Collection – works to preserve the history of the whole County.

Groups of students walked over with their teachers to take a look at interesting artefacts related to Ysgol Aberconwy itself, as well as the surrounding area. As a Conwy County school, part of our past is preserved in the Archives for anyone interested in viewing it. The documents students got to see included prospectuses from decades past – with the mid-2000s no doubt feeling far more historical to Year Eight than to any teachers or parents reading this – newspapers mentioning school events, panoramic photos, and century-old school registers.

After having a look at the archival material, students were taken for a tour of the Archive storeroom underground. They were told about the types of things that Conwy Archives preserves, and got to see some pieces from the Museum collection for themselves. We heard some great questions from insightful students whose interest was peaked by the history on offer. No doubt it was exciting to connect to a part of the past that’s easy to relate to, getting to see a small snapshot of how older Ysgol Aberconwy students lived their school lives.

For anyone in the school who’s starting to think about their future and what they want to study, Conwy Archives is a useful and underutilised resource, just down the road! Older students can visit on their own and make use of the collection if they have an interest in history, especially if they’ve got something in mind related to local or cultural history. Those thinking of a more artistic path might benefit from stopping by the Clip Corner hosted at Conwy Archives, which lets visitors into Wales’ history of television, film, and radio. It includes clips from broadcasts dating back to the 1800s, and would be a wonderful tool for anyone interested in studying film or creative media.

There are many opportunities to connect with our cultural heritage all around us, and at Ysgol Aberconwy, we are pleased whenever we have a chance to introduce our student body to something new. We hope everyone in Year Eight who attended gained a fresh perspective on what’s out there in our area!
