At Ysgol Aberconwy, we are always looking for opportunities to enrich our students’ learning experiences, and the Modern Foreign Language (MFL) Mentoring program is one such initiative. This year, our Year 9 students have been taking part in a fantastic language mentoring project, which has allowed them to explore the world through the lens of language and culture.
MFL Mentoring connects university students with local secondary school pupils to help them understand the benefits of studying International Languages at GCSE and beyond. This year, we were thrilled to have Branda, a university student from China, join us to mentor our students. Over six engaging sessions, Branda worked with a group of Year 9 learners to explore the links between language, culture, identity, and future ambitions.
The students delved into topics such as how language shapes our sense of self, how it connects us to the world around us, and how learning languages can open doors for future opportunities. The sessions gave our students a chance to reflect on how language learning can influence their confidence and broaden their horizons, both locally and globally.
We would like to thank Branda for sharing her insights into life in China and the Chinese language.
