February half term saw forty students from years 10 to 13 jet off to New York with Mr Dennis, Miss McCusker, Mr Roche and Miss P Williams. Staff and students managed to fit a lot in to their four day visit taking in as many sights (and smells) as possible.
Walking approximately 18km the first full day allowed us to take our first subway journey to Brooklyn Bridge where we walked the full length before sightseeing and relaxing in Brooklyn. From there we headed back to the subway to visit The Ghostbusters Firehouse on our way to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. We also took in the sights of the Charging Bull and Flatiron Building before heading up to Fifth Avenue and Broadway for food and shopping before finishing the day with a visit to the top of the Empire State Building to take in the amazing night-time views of Manhattan.
Day two was another early start with a leisurely walk around Central Park and the designer store fronts of Fifth Avenue and Trump Towers. After heading downtown, we experienced the ‘Top of the Rock’ to capture the Manhattan views in daylight. Students then shopped til they dropped around Times Square before we had a group meal at the Hard Rock Café before a more leisurely stroll back to the hotel to rest after another 18km walked!
Our final day saw our final early start to make the most of our last morning. We headed off to the UN Building where we visited lots of chambers and even witnessed the resolution discussions around Ukraine and Russia taking place. Leaving there we managed to squeeze in a visit to Grand Central Station before heading back to the hotel for our transfer and flight home.
It is safe to say, we managed to experience a lot in a short space of time! The whole trip was an adventure filled with unforgettable experiences and learning for a group of students that managed to be on time to every meet up! Staff and students have made memories that will last a lifetime.
Students in year 10 and 11, planning to return for sixth form, should watch this space for a possible New York 2027 experience!
