Have you ever thought about what it would be like to be a doctor? Well, some of our students from Year 10 and 11 had the exciting opportunity to find out during a special event in February at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd! The Future Doctors Day, organised by Careers Wales, was designed for budding young medics to explore a bit of the medical world and discover what it takes to work in this field.
As soon as our students arrived, they were warmly welcomed and prepared for the day ahead. The event began with some hands-on activities that let them try out essential medical skills. Imagine learning how to stitch a wound! With guidance from an experienced professional, the students practiced this crucial skill. Next, the students moved on to another interesting activity: taking blood samples. They learned how essential blood tests are in diagnosing various conditions and how doctors use this information to help patients before practicing on a mannequin arm. But that wasn’t all! The students also got to practice resuscitation techniques too. Using dummies, they learned how to perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and understand the importance of acting fast when someone’s heart stops. It was inspiring to see the young learners taking these tasks seriously, knowing that one day these skills may help them to assist someone or even save a life!
To wrap up the day, the students had a special guest appearance from an Accident and Emergency (A&E) anaesthetist. This expert spoke about their day-to-day responsibilities and the exciting challenges of working in the hospital’s accident and emergency department. The anaesthetist shared fascinating stories of their career and described how important it is to ensure patients are comfortable and safe during surgeries. The head of the new teaching school for future medics at Bangor University also joined the event virtually via Teams. They talked about the amazing opportunities available for those interested in pursuing a career in medicine, including the various subjects and experiences students should focus on in their studies.
The Future Doctors Day at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd was not just about learning medical skills; it was about inspiring young minds. The students left filled with excitement and knowledge about the medical field and what lies ahead for them if they choose to follow this path. Who knows? Maybe among them is a future doctor who will change lives and make the world a healthier place!
